Busan, South Korea – In an effort to honor the vital contributions of seafarers, Busan is in the midst of celebrating the inaugural Seafarers’ Day on June 21, 2024. This new national day, established by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, aims to raise public awareness about the essential role seafarers play in the global economy while boosting their pride and recognition.
The festivities began on June 15 and will continue until June 21, featuring a series of events and activities designed to engage the public and celebrate the seafaring community.
Seafarers’ Week commenced on June 15 with the “Hanmaeum Walking Festival” at Busan North Port Waterfront Park. This event brought together locals and visitors in a show of solidarity and appreciation for seafarers. The same day, a special documentary aired on EBS at 2:00 PM, providing an intimate look into the lives of seafarers.
On June 19, the inaugural Seafarers’ Festival, organized by the National Maritime Seafarers’ Union Federation, will take place. This event promises a vibrant celebration with various activities highlighting the cultural and social aspects of seafaring life.
A seafarer-focused seminar is scheduled for June 20 at the Busan Museum of Movies. Hosted by the Korea Ship Management Industry Association (KOSMA), this seminar will discuss the challenges and advancements in the maritime industry, fostering a deeper understanding among industry stakeholders.
The highlight of the week will be the official Seafarers’ Day ceremony on June 21 at 1:20 PM in the grand auditorium of Korea Maritime and Ocean University in Yeongdo-gu, Busan. Attendees will have a rare opportunity to explore the “Hannara,” a 9,000-ton training vessel, offering a firsthand glimpse into the daily life of seafarers.
Minister Kang Do-hyung of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries emphasized the importance of this observance: “The first Seafarers’ Day is a pivotal occasion for the public to acknowledge the efforts and achievements of seafarers, thereby enhancing their societal status. Our ongoing commitment is to improve the working conditions for seafarers, who are essential to the frontline of our export industry.”
Seafarers’ Day aligns with global initiatives such as the International Day of the Seafarer, celebrated worldwide on June 25. This day, established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), seeks to recognize the critical contributions of seafarers to international trade and the global economy.
Busan’s celebration of Seafarers’ Day is part of a broader effort to enhance the welfare and recognition of seafarers, addressing issues such as shore leave, social cohesion, and welfare support.
As the city continues its week-long celebrations, Busan underscores its commitment to honoring and supporting the seafaring community, marking the beginning of a tradition that will continue to celebrate these essential workers for years to come.
