The announcement came after Busan emerged victorious in a close contest with Langkawi, Malaysia, for the rights to host the event. The decision was finalized at the 25th IRO Committee meeting in Athens, Greece, on January 20, 2024. Busan's successful bid is the culmination of a strategic campaign that highlighted the city's appeal and the benefits of hosting the event in Busan, according to officials.

The IRO is not just any competition; it's one of the world's leading youth robotics contests, held since 1999. It brings together representatives from 30 partner countries to compete in 42 categories over five days.
