Groundbreaking Ceremony for Gwangandaegyo Bridge Access Road Connection Project in Busan

The city of Busan is set to commence full-scale construction on the Gwangandaegyo Bridge Access Road Connection Project, aimed at resolving traffic difficulties in Haeundae-gu, Centum City, and the new downtown area. A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on March 20 at Olympic Park in Haeundae-gu, Busan, with attendance by Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon and over 200 people, including local lawmakers, Haeundae-gu district mayor, city councilors, and residents.

The project involves constructing a 276-meter connection ramp linking the Centum City underpass from the BEXCO tollgate and a 284-meter underpass connecting the Centum underpass to Olympic Dongsan Samgeori (three-way intersection). With a total project cost of KRW 39 billion, the project aims for completion in December 2025.

Upon completion, vehicles traveling from Jangsan-ro, Haeundae-gu to Wondong Interchange will be able to use the Centum Underpass directly, bypassing the Olympic Intersection or Centum City Intersection. Vehicles traveling from Suyeonggangbyeon-daero to the Olympic Park will also be able to avoid the Olympic Park and proceed through the Centum City Intersection, significantly improving traffic congestion along Suyeonggangbyeon-daero and Haeundae-daero.

Additionally, the city plans to demolish the current toll booths (BEXCO and Suyeonggangbyeon toll booths) on Gwangan Bridge and install a smart tolling system. This system will automatically charge tolls by recognizing vehicle license plates, eliminating the need for vehicles to slow down or stop to pay tolls. This is expected to help alleviate congestion at toll booths and enhance safety.

Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon said, "The completion of the Gwangandaegyo Bridge access road connection and smart tolling system will greatly contribute to resolving traffic congestion and revitalizing local tourism by dispersing traffic and securing bypass roads in Haeundae and the entire Centum City area."
