Global Experts Gather at Busan Maritime & Finance Week 2024

Busan, South Korea – Today, Busan Maritime & Finance Week (BMFW) kicked off, drawing finance and maritime industry leaders from around the globe to discuss strategies and innovations that could position Busan as a global center for maritime finance. Running from October 29-31 at the Lotte and Paradise Hotels, the event is co-hosted by Busan Metropolitan City, the Korea Ocean Business Corporation (KOBC), the Financial Supervisory Service, Marine Money, and the Busan International Financial Promotion Agency. Now in its fourth year, BMFW aims to advance Busan's status as a hub for maritime finance, a strategic vision closely aligned with the city’s growth objectives.

Alfred Chang, Bloomberg's North Asia Head, opened the event with a keynote address on economic trends that shape the maritime sector, setting the stage for a series of expert-led sessions. Throughout the week, speakers from global financial institutions, including economists from Bloomberg and ICBC, will present on macroeconomic issues and China’s economic outlook—topics of particular relevance to a maritime finance hub with global ambitions.

Specialized panels will explore investment opportunities in ship financing, a critical element of infrastructure development within the maritime industry. According to organizers, these sessions reflect BMFW’s commitment to delivering actionable insights for participants invested in the sector’s future.

The primary goal of BMFW 2024 is to strengthen Busan's position as a global center for maritime finance, a vision shared by both city officials and industry leaders. Deputy Mayor Kim Gwanghoe emphasized the significance of this event, stating that BMFW serves as an essential platform for building Busan’s credibility and connections within the industry. Through collaboration with key organizations, including KOBC and the Financial Supervisory Service, Busan seeks to leverage this event to accelerate its transformation into a recognized hub in both traditional and sustainable finance.

The event also aims to enhance Busan’s global profile by showcasing its growing role in sustainable finance, addressing critical topics in the international maritime finance landscape. This effort aligns with current global trends in economic resilience, environmental responsibility, and industry innovation.

A defining feature of BMFW 2024 is its focus on sustainable finance solutions tailored for the maritime sector. Topics such as green finance and the European Union’s Emissions Trading System (EU-ETS) are scheduled for in-depth discussion, highlighting how the maritime industry is adapting to stricter environmental standards. As the industry moves toward decarbonization, sustainable ship financing emerges as a focal point, addressing both market demands and regulatory pressures.

BMFW’s sessions on green maritime financing underscore Busan’s efforts to position itself as a leader in environmentally conscious finance. Presentations will cover innovation in green shipping, exploring how shipping companies and financial institutions are partnering to drive cleaner technology and reduce emissions. This programming is part of Busan’s broader commitment to aligning its maritime finance goals with global sustainability trends.

This year’s BMFW also features sessions on Busan’s strategies for growth within the financial sector. Hosted by the Busan International Financial Promotion Agency, a series of discussions will outline steps the city is taking to solidify its role as a global financial center. Topics will include policy innovation, the role of policy-driven finance in maritime sector development, and Busan’s unique position within this industry.

Panelists, including representatives from KOBC, the Financial Supervisory Service, and industry stakeholders, will discuss Busan’s strategy for aligning with global finance needs. Analysts note that these efforts are key to advancing Busan’s competitive standing, enabling it to offer targeted financial services within the broader landscape of international maritime finance.

With a packed agenda and high-profile speakers, the event is expected to spark new ideas and strategies to advance Busan’s development as a global maritime finance hub. City officials express optimism that the discussions this week will support Busan’s progress toward this vision.
