Enrollment Rates Drop for Lower-Ranked Universities in Busan

After a tumultuous year due to the pandemic, fifteen universities in Busan have recently announced the results of their 2023 freshman class admissions. However, only one university out of the fifteen, Korea Maritime University, managed to fill all available spots, leaving the other fourteen with unfilled seats.

The total number of students enrolled out of a total of 31,180 was 29,921, resulting in a 95.9% enrollment rate. This year's rate represents a 4.2% increase compared to last year's record low rate of 91.7%. There was also a 2.7% increase from the previous year's rate of 93.2%. This year's enrollment numbers also saw a decrease in unregistered students from 2,086 in 2022 to 1,261 this year.

Most universities fell short of full enrollment, with Dong-A University, Pusan National University, Pukyong National University, and Kyungsung University filling almost all of their available spots with a 99% enrollment rate. The increased enrollment rate was particularly notable for Busan University of Foreign Studies, which saw an increase of 17%, from 82.6% last year to 99.7% this year.

However, several lower-ranked universities had up to 300 unfilled spots. These universities are predominantly known for their industry-linked education programs or prime projects and have yet to restructure their departments by reducing or merging them. To address this issue, these universities are expected to undergo significant reforms next year, which may include reducing enrollment and departmental restructuring.

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and difficulties in attracting students, universities in Busan continue to pursue innovative strategies to increase enrollment and attract more students. With the upcoming reforms in place, the universities are expected to become more competitive and offer better education to students.
