Busan to Host 2024 Debian Developer Conference

Busan, South Korea- Busan is set to host the 25th annual Debian Developer Conference, DebConf24, from July 21 to August 4, 2024. This event will take place at Pukyong National University and is expected to attract over 1,000 participants from around the world. The conference will feature a comprehensive program including development workshops, technical sessions, and a job fair aimed at fostering collaboration and innovation within the open-source software community.

The DebConf24 conference, organized by The Debian Project and supported by local institutions like Pukyong National University and the Busan Metropolitan Government, underscores Busan's growing reputation as a hub for technological innovation. This year's event is particularly significant as it marks a quarter-century of Debian conferences, which have played a pivotal role in advancing the Debian operating system and its derivatives, such as Ubuntu and Linux Mint.

The conference will begin with DebCamp, a week-long period from July 21-27 dedicated to focused development and collaboration among developers. This will be followed by the main conference, DebConf, from July 28 to August 4. The schedule includes over 90 sessions covering a range of topics, from system administration and security to cloud computing and embedded systems.

In addition to technical sessions, DebConf24 will feature a job fair on July 28, where students and job seekers can connect with leading tech companies. This fair aims to provide opportunities for local and international talent to engage with potential employers and explore career prospects in the tech industry.

The conference will also include social events such as Debian Day, a conference dinner, and a day trip, all designed to foster a sense of community and collaboration among attendees. These events provide an informal setting for participants to exchange ideas and build lasting professional relationships.

Woohee Yang, a member of the local organizing team, designed the winning logo for DebConf24, which will be prominently featured in all promotional materials. This logo reflects the cultural heritage of Busan and symbolizes the event's connection to the city.

Hosting DebConf24 aligns with Busan’s strategic goals of enhancing its profile as a center for technological development and innovation. The event is expected to significantly contribute to the local ICT industry by facilitating networking and knowledge exchange among global tech leaders and local developers.

Director of Busan’s Digital Economy Innovation Office, expressed optimism about the conference's impact. "Hosting the Debian Developer Conference in Busan is a significant milestone. It not only highlights our city's commitment to technological advancement but also provides a crucial platform for local talent to engage with global leaders in the field," he said. "We are dedicated to supporting the event to ensure it is a resounding success and to leverage it as a foundation for cultivating high-level ICT talent tailored to the needs of our local industry."

DebConf24 promises to be a landmark event in the world of open-source software development, bringing together a diverse array of developers, innovators, and tech enthusiasts to Busan. The city is poised to benefit significantly from this gathering, which will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on its technological landscape.
