Busan Pushes for the Opportunity to Host the 2030 World Expo

As Busan City takes a step closer to becoming a global hub city, the city is determined to make 2023 the "first year of leapfrogging" by promoting large-scale projects such as hosting the 2030 World Expo, opening Gadeokdo New Airport early, redeveloping Busan North Port, and relocating the Industrial Bank of Korea headquarters to Busan. The city will respond to the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) due diligence on its application for the 2030 World Expo and start promoting Busan in earnest. The BIE's on-site visit to South Korea will take place from April 3-7 in Seoul and Busan. The city plans to actively promote its intention to host the event, as well as its various attractions, rich infrastructure, and the high aspirations of its citizens.

Gadeokdo New Airport is expected to open early with the help of a "floating maritime airport (plan)" that has been officially proposed to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport. The city expects the hybrid method of construction will not only shorten the construction period but also be eco-friendly and scalable.

The redevelopment of Busan North Port is underway in preparation for the BIE delegation's visit to Busan in April. The first phase of the redevelopment was completed on December 20, 2022, and the city is making every effort to quickly complete the second phase. The Redevelopment Project of Busan North Port is key to the success of Busan's bid for the 2030 World Expo.
