Busan Hosts UN Weeks 2024 to Honor Global Peace Initiatives

Busan, South Korea—As global conflicts persist, the city of Busan is set to host UN Weeks 2024, an annual event that brings attention to international peace and honors those who served in the Korean War. Taking place from October 24 to November 11, 2024, this event reinforces Busan’s commitment to global peace efforts and remembers the sacrifices of United Nations soldiers who fought for freedom.

Since its inception in 2019, UN Weeks has grown into a cornerstone event for Busan, a city historically tied to the United Nations through its UN Memorial Cemetery, the only one of its kind in the world. The event reflects both the city’s history and its future as a key player in peace-building initiatives.

“Busan is a city that overcame the devastation of war to become a global symbol of international cooperation and peace,” said Mayor Park Heong-joon, underlining Busan’s evolution.

The event begins on October 24 with the 79th UN Day Ceremony at the UN Memorial Cemetery, where veterans, local residents, and international dignitaries gather to remember those who lost their lives during the Korean War. This ceremony not only honors past sacrifices but also promotes continued efforts toward peace. Additionally, the UN Peace Road Walkathon, a signature event, invites citizens and visitors to participate in a symbolic journey of unity and reflection.

Following this, the World Peace Forum, scheduled for November 1, will bring together international experts, journalists, and representatives from peace organizations. They will explore actionable strategies for preventing conflict and fostering international cooperation. With the theme of "A World Without War", the forum will highlight the importance of peaceful diplomacy in today’s global climate.

Busan’s development from a war-torn refuge into a thriving metropolis makes it a fitting host for such an event. The city’s unique role as the home of the UN Memorial Cemetery serves as a reminder of the United Nations' historic involvement in peacekeeping efforts during the Korean War. By hosting UN Weeks, Busan positions itself as a city committed to international diplomacy and global peace.

Busan’s ties to the UN go beyond symbolism. The UN Memorial Cemetery is the resting place of more than 2,300 soldiers from 11 countries who fought during the Korean War. This connection gives the city a special responsibility to promote peace and ensure that the lessons of war are never forgotten.

A central goal of UN Weeks is to engage the local community in the global conversation on peace. The event includes various community-centered activities, such as the Remember Roll-Call, where the names of fallen UN soldiers are read aloud. This activity encourages citizens to connect with Busan’s history and the city’s ongoing commitment to global peace.

Additionally, programs like The Korean War Heroes Mission, designed for youth, aim to educate younger generations on the historical significance of the Korean War. This interactive, hands-on experience allows families and students to engage with history in a meaningful way.

With ongoing global conflicts, the timing of UN Weeks feels particularly relevant. The discussions at the World Peace Forum are expected to resonate with current events, as international experts address topics related to conflict resolution and the future of peacekeeping. The presence of prominent figures from media and non-governmental organizations underscores the importance of continuing dialogue about peace in today’s complex geopolitical landscape.

The 2024 UN Weeks in Busan will conclude with the Turn Toward Busan Memorial Ceremony on November 11, where a minute of silence will be observed in honor of those who served during the Korean War. This powerful act of remembrance serves as a closing reflection on the cost of conflict and the enduring need for global cooperation in maintaining peace.
