Earth Day, observed annually on April 22nd, was established in response to a 1969 oil spill off the coast of California to promote environmental conservation. A variety of worldwide commemorative events have been held, primarily led by private organizations. In South Korea, Climate Change Week has been observed since 2009, promoting public awareness campaigns and initiatives.
To mark the 53rd Earth Day, Busan City will host an Earth Day commemorative ceremony on April 19th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the City Hall's 12th-floor international conference hall. The ceremony will include the awarding of individuals who have made significant contributions to greenhouse gas reduction.
Additionally, on April 22nd, from 8 p.m. to 8:10 p.m., a 10-minute Earth Day Lights Out event will be held. During this time, lights will be turned off simultaneously at major landmarks, including Busan City Hall, police stations, Busan Tower, Gwangandaegyo Bridge, Busan Harbor Bridge, Nurimaru, Busan Cultural Center, and Busan International Finance Center.
On April 27th, at 3 p.m., a carbon-neutral lifestyle campaign will be held at Busan Citizens Park, co-hosted by Busan City, Busan Climate and Environment Network, and Busanjin-gu District. The event is open to all citizens, who can sign up for a carbon-neutral point system on-site.
The head of Busan City's Clean Water Policy Division expressed, "Through the 15th Climate Change Week, held in conjunction with the 53rd Earth Day, we expect to form a consensus on carbon neutrality and foster a carbon-neutral lifestyle atmosphere in everyday life." The official also encouraged citizens to actively participate in the various commemorative events, especially the Lights Out event, considering the significance of Earth Day, even if it may be slightly inconvenient.
