Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) is gearing up to establish a research and development (R&D) hub in the city of Busan. On the 12th, the company inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the city of Busan concerning the construction of the ‘Busan R&D Center’.

Key stakeholders, including SHI President Jung Jin-taek and Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon, attended the signing ceremony. Under the agreement, Samsung Heavy Industries plans to move into a 1,700 square meter R&D hub in Busan by November. The city of Busan has pledged its full administrative support for the establishment of the center.

As the shipbuilding and maritime industry continues to thrive, Samsung Heavy Industries has been expanding its scale. With the Geoje shipyard at its core, the company has hired over 170 individuals so far this year, following the recruitment of 200 individuals in the previous year.

The new Busan R&D Center of Samsung Heavy Industries will primarily focus on the design and engineering aspects of its maritime plant business. From the 13th of this month, the company plans to begin recruiting specialized personnel in Hull Side structure, equipment, and electrical design fields. By 2024, over 200 employees, including those from partner companies, are expected to work at the center.

The new Busan R&D center will join the ranks of SHI’s existing R&D hubs at Pangyo and Daedeok, thereby forming an integral part of the company’s plan to establish an organic collaboration system.

An HR representative of Samsung Heavy Industries said, “Busan is not only home to shipping and ports but also hosts a well-established cluster of shipbuilding and maritime-related industries. Additionally, with its abundant young talent from local research institutes and universities, it is an advantageous location for securing top-tier talent.” They added, “We will make every effort to ensure that the Busan R&D Center grows into a central axis for Samsung Heavy Industries’ marine design and engineering.”
