The coastal city of Busan is aiming to establish itself as the “City of Walking and Busking” with the installation of more than 100 locations for street performances. This ambitious project comes as Busan recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Busan City Children’s Home Association to utilize the Galmat-gil Busking Performance Hall for children’s daycare center events.
Galmat-gil is a popular pedestrian street that spans the entire coast, riverside, forest, and city center of Busan, with a total length of 278.8 kilometers. The name is a compound word of “seagull” and “path,” which symbolizes the sea, rivers, mountains, and hot springs that Busan is known for. The Galmat-gil Busking Performance Zones are a civic resting and civic participation space located along this street that can host a variety of events, including dance, magic, singing, pantomime, kindergarten festivals, club presentations, and resident self-governance center work exhibitions.

The space is available for use by anyone who wants to apply, and the application process can be completed at Galmat-gil Busking Nurijip. Currently, there are six locations across the city, including Oryukdo Skywalk, Dadaepo Beach, Gamcheon Culture Village, Hakjangcheon Promenade, Myeongpum Street Park, and Gijanggun Onjeong Village. The city plans to install ten additional locations this year, which will bring the total to 16, and more than 100 locations in the future.
Mayor Park Hyung-jun hopes that this initiative will improve the quality of life of Busan’s citizens. He expressed his vision for Busan becoming an emotional city where a happy 15-minute lifestyle is established through busking on Galmat-gil, which is operated in cooperation with citizen participation. The project aims to establish Busan as a hub for street performances and make the city a more vibrant and exciting place to live and visit.
