This initiative, launched by the city in partnership with the Busan International Architecture Festival (BIAF) Organizing Committee, aims to create innovative, sustainable architectural landmarks by relaxing traditional building regulations in designated areas. The event, to be held on October 18th at the City Hall Auditorium, will see world-renowned architects—including Pritzker Prize-winning firms—present their bold designs to the public, offering a rare glimpse into the future of Busan’s cityscape.
Director of the Housing & Architecture Bureau at Busan City, emphasized the significance of the initiative: “This project is not just about constructing buildings—it’s about redefining what cities can be. The highlight of the event will be the unveiling of six pilot projects, designed by top-tier architectural firms from across the globe. Each firm was carefully selected for its expertise in integrating innovative design with sustainable urban planning.

- Nampo-dong Mixed-use Town by MVRDV: This project will blend living, working, and cultural spaces into a cohesive, multi-functional environment that reflects Nampo-dong’s vibrant urban identity.
- Mipo Oceanside Hotel by OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture): A luxury hotel on Busan’s famous coastline, designed to merge seamlessly with the surrounding seaside, enhancing the city’s status as a premier destination for international tourism.
- Yeongdo Collective Hills by MVRDV: A collective housing solution for the island district of Yeongdo, offering innovative living spaces tailored to meet the needs of a modern urban population.
- Yongdugol Mixed-use Facility by 2Portzamparc: This project aims to integrate commercial, residential, and public spaces in Yongdugol, creating a dynamic, multifunctional facility for the community.

Each architectural firm will present its designs in a 20-minute session, followed by a 20-minute Q&A, allowing attendees to gain deeper insights into the creative and technical processes behind each proposal.

The results will be announced on October 22nd through Busan’s official Design Competition website, marking the next step in the city’s quest for architectural excellence.
In a move to engage the public, 500 attendees will be able to participate in the event by registering online from October 8th through the Busan International Architecture Festival website.
