Virtual Exhibition of Korea's Demilitarized Zone by Busan Memorial Museum and Google Arts&Culture

The Busan Provisional Capital Memorial Museum Hall has recently partnered with Google Arts&Culture to launch an online project titled "Korea's Demilitarized Zone". The DMZ is a significant cultural and natural asset that spans across the center of the Korean Peninsula, representing Korea's past, present, and future.

The online exhibition, which is now available on the Google Arts & Culture website and on IOS or Android devices, showcases over 5,000 materials and 60 online exhibits structured around three themes: history, nature, and art. The museum's contributions to the exhibition are focused on Busan's role as the provisional capital of South Korea during the Korean War. The exhibition includes seven themes such as the Presidential Office of the Provisional Capital, the daily lives of refugees, artists during the war, and milmyeon, a beloved Korean noodle dish made by refugees during the conflict.

Milmyeon is a regional specialty from Busan, a city that faced a great deal of hardship during the Korean War. The dish consists of thin, chewy noodles made from wheat flour and potato starch served in a spicy meat broth with slices of beef or pork, vegetables, and a boiled egg. Visitors to the exhibition can learn about the dish's unique history and significance in Korean cuisine.

In addition to exploring the history of the Korean War, the exhibition highlights the unique landscapes and foods that emerged from the adversity of the conflict. Exhibits include Sanbock Roads, mountain roads created when people built houses on hills during poverty, and milmyeon.

Visitors can use 3D mapping technology to virtually explore the Presidential Office and other Korean War-related locations. This feature allows people from all around the world to experience the different histories and materials related to the Busan Provisional Capital.

Dong Jin-sook, Director of the Busan Provisional Capital Memorial Museum, stated that the partnership with Google Arts&Culture is significant as it promotes Korea's history and uniqueness, as the only armistice country in the world, on the 70th anniversary of the Armistice Agreement. The museum hopes this project will allow people from all around the world to appreciate and learn about the Busan Provisional Capital's different histories and materials.

The "Korea's Demilitarized Zone" exhibition is available on the Google Arts & Culture website and IOS or Android devices. We invite you to explore the exhibition to learn about the Korean War's significant events, Busan's role as the provisional capital, and the unique landscapes and foods that emerged during the conflict, including the beloved milmyeon dish.
