Eco Delta City to Host New Green Data Centers, Boosting Jobs and Sustainability

In a landmark move for digital infrastructure development, Busan City has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with four leading data center companies, committing to an investment of 3.6 trillion KRW in the establishment of a green data center cluster within Eco Delta City (EDC). This investment aims not only to enhance the region's digital service capabilities but also to promote environmental sustainability and generate over a thousand jobs, marking a major step forward in regional economic development.

On February 6, 2024, in the video conference room of the city hall, Busan City formalized its partnership with Busan Eco Delta Green Data Center PFV, Empyrion DC Consortium, BEP & Mirae Asset Consortium, and Elice Group. These entities are at the forefront of constructing and operating green data centers, which are essential for supporting a wide array of IT services while minimizing carbon footprints through energy-efficient technologies.

The investment totaling 3.6 trillion KRW will be directed toward building and operating green data centers, expected to create 1,022 direct jobs. This initiative is projected to have a substantial ripple effect on the local economy, including an 8.2 trillion KRW increase in production-induced effects and significant tax revenue boosts for the local government.

A key component of this project is its commitment to the local community and economy, promising priority employment for local residents and partnerships with local businesses for construction and operational needs. This approach is anticipated to foster job creation, stimulate local businesses, and contribute to the region's digital and green transformation.

With the design and regulatory approvals targeted for completion within the year, construction is expected to begin in early 2025, with operations commencing in the latter half of 2027. To ensure the project's uninterrupted progress, a Green Data Center (DC) Consortium has been established to collaboratively address any arising challenges and support the cluster's successful development.

Mayor Park Heong-joon expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, "By attracting these four companies, we are not only investing in the economic growth and job creation in our region but also paving the way for a digital and environmental revolution in the industry. This investment will catalyze the development of forward-looking IT and green technologies, fostering a robust digital ecosystem in Busan."
