Busan Pioneers Urban Sustainability with the Launch of the Green City Bureau

To transform Busan into a city where greenery and urban life coalesce harmoniously, the city administration convened the "Employee Communication and Empathy Time" on March 18 at the Hwamyeong Arboretum. This initiative heralds the start of a focused dialogue on enhancing the city's green spaces and integrating ecological principles into the urban fabric, reflecting the administration's commitment to building a sustainable, eco-friendly urban environment.

The establishment of the Green City Bureau on February 14 represents a cornerstone in Busan's environmental policy, positioning it as the third city nationwide to institutionalize such a dedicated effort towards urban greening. The bureau aims to significantly expand and qualitatively enhance the city's parks and green spaces, aligning with global standards of urban ecological design and sustainability.

The Green City Bureau is composed of three departments and one project office, totaling 15 teams. This structure allows for specialized focus areas ranging from policy development to park construction and maintenance. With a total personnel count exceeding 100 individuals, the bureau is equipped to manage and expand Busan's green infrastructure comprehensively.

The inaugural "Communication and Empathy Time" session witnessed the active participation of approximately 40 employees from the Green City Bureau. Discussions revolved around the strategic vision of transforming Busan into a vibrant eco-city, teeming with accessible parks and gardens that offer residents and visitors alike a taste of nature amidst the urban landscape.

Mayor Park Heong-joon emphasized the city's objective to emulate the model of integrated park and recreational designs found in global examples such as London's Hyde Park. By fostering continuous dialogue with city employees and incorporating innovative design principles, Busan aims to create an urban environment where every citizen can enjoy the beauty and tranquility of nature.

The session also highlighted the department's key strategies, including the enhancement of Haeundae Arboretum, the connection of green corridors within the city, and the adoption of green initiatives in urban development projects. Mayor Park reassured city employees of his unwavering support and urged them to work collectively towards realizing the dream of a premier eco-city in Busan.
