2025 Busan Rock Festival Unveils First Wave of Artists: Tickets Selling Fast
Breeze in Busan | Busan Rock Festival 2025 Reveals Lineup

Busan, South Korea — As anticipation builds for one of Asia's most beloved music gatherings, the 2025 Busan International Rock Festival (BIRF) has revealed its first artist lineup, offering a glimpse into the sounds that will echo across Samnak Ecological Park from September 26 to 28. Celebrating its 26th edition, the festival continues its transformation from a local institution into a truly global event, spotlighting a compelling mix of legendary acts and rising voices from around the world.

Headlining this year’s first wave are some of the most distinctive names in modern rock: the iconic American alternative band The Smashing Pumpkins, making their long-awaited Busan debut; Japanese metal-pop pioneers BABYMETAL, performing for the first time at a Korean festival; and American electronic virtuoso Porter Robinson, whose emotionally resonant sets have earned him global acclaim. Their presence affirms BIRF’s ambition to stretch beyond traditional genre lines and captivate a wide spectrum of music fans.

This year’s lineup also embraces diversity across Asia, featuring Japan’s genre-defying Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Thai chart-toppers Slot Machine, Taiwanese indie trio Sorry Youth, and Japanese garage rockers go!go!vanillas. Representing the Korean scene are celebrated names like Guckkasten, Thornapple, Nerd Connection, Na Sanghyun Band, We Are The Night, and the uniquely styled Pumba 21, whose fusion of punk and folk-rock humor has become a festival favorite.

What sets BIRF apart is not just its stage power but its ethos of discovery and inclusion. The festival’s “Road to BU-ROCK” tour—an outreach concert series—has expanded globally, reaching fans not only in Seoul and Busan, but also in Taipei, Taiwan, where performances earlier this month introduced the festival's energy to a new international audience. Japanese band SPYAIR, a past crowd favorite in Busan, is set to return in June for the Seoul edition of the road show.

In parallel, BIRF remains committed to cultivating fresh talent through “Rookies on the BU-ROCK,” a competitive artist discovery program that has become a launchpad for Korea’s next wave of indie acts. Applications open this month, with selected artists earning a chance to perform alongside festival headliners—often a pivotal moment in their musical journey.

Demand for the 2025 edition is already surging. Early bird passes, released via YES24 on May 13, sold out in under a minute, reflecting not only the strength of the lineup but the enduring passion of BIRF’s loyal fan base. The discounted 3-day tickets were offered at 193,600 KRW—20% off the standard price.

Since its first iteration in 2000, the Busan International Rock Festival has weathered the shifting tides of the music industry, growing from a grassroots cultural initiative into a showcase of global musical voices. As Busan continues to evolve as a hub for international events, BIRF is increasingly seen not just as a music festival, but as a platform for cultural diplomacy and creative connection.
