Busan City, South Korea, has announced the commencement of the ‘Busan Democracy Park Museum Annex’ construction project, a dedicated facility to systematically preserve, exhibit, research, and educate the public on materials related to the democratization movement.
The project, which started in March this year, has a budget of 15.8 billion won ($13.1 million), with 6.9 billion won ($5.7 million) funded by the national government and 8.9 billion won ($7.4 million) provided by the city. The museum will be situated in Jungang Park, Dongdaesin-dong 2-ga, Seo-gu, and will comprise two basement levels and three above-ground floors, covering a total floor area of 2,191.10 square meters (23,575 square feet). The anticipated completion date is November 2024.
The museum will be equipped with state-of-the-art preservation facilities, including a preservation library, a preservation treatment room, and an audio-visual library. These facilities will house over 56,000 materials related to the democratization movement, which are currently stored in Democracy Park. The first basement level will feature a ‘visible storage room,’ showcasing 1,000 works of folk art, one of the largest collections in South Korea. The second floor will include an exhibition room and an experiential education center, providing an engaging and accessible perspective on the democratization movement’s materials.
Upon completion, the museum will ensure that historical materials related to Busan’s Democratic Movement are systematically managed, preserving their historical value and making them available for academic research and civic education. The museum will also function as a regional cultural hub, offering leisure and relaxation opportunities alongside Democracy Park’s exhibitions, performances, and cultural programs.
The Busan Democracy Park Museum Annex aims to record the memories of past democratization movements and share them with future generations, helping to instill democratic values. Busan City officials have committed to doing their best to solidify Busan’s status as the ‘Holy Land of Democracy’ and have requested citizens’ understanding during the construction period.
