Busan, South Korea—The Busan Modern & Contemporary History Museum (BMCHM) is set to unveil the Original Downtown Music Walk, a unique cultural experience that highlights the city’s rich musical and historical legacy. Scheduled for November 30 and December 1, 2024, this weekend event will combine guided tours, exhibitions, and live performances to celebrate Busan’s vibrant role as a hub of Korean popular music.
The Original Downtown Music Walk is part of BMCHM’s broader “Busan Walk” initiative, which aims to showcase Busan’s cultural and historical identity through immersive, theme-based programs. This year’s event takes participants on a journey through the city’s historic downtown, a cradle of Korean popular music from the 1960s to the 1980s. Attendees will explore key landmarks that tell the story of Busan’s dynamic music scene while delving into the lives and emotions of the people who shaped it.
Participants in the Original Downtown Music Walk will visit some of Busan’s most iconic and historically significant locations. The journey begins at Yeongdo Bridge, a landmark intrinsically linked to the legacy of the renowned Korean singer Hyun-in. As a symbol of Busan’s cultural resilience during the post-liberation era, the bridge offers a compelling glimpse into the city’s historical narrative and its ties to Korean popular music.
From there, the tour moves to the 40-step Stairway, a poignant reminder of the struggles endured by refugees during the Korean War. Immortalized in several popular songs, the stairway stands as a testament to the perseverance and strength of the people who lived through this turbulent time.
Next, participants will experience the charm of a historic Music Listening Room in Gwangbok-dong. These venues were cultural epicenters during the 1960s and 1980s, where DJs curated vinyl records for captivated audiences. Visitors will relive the nostalgic atmosphere of these iconic spaces, integral to Busan’s music culture.

The November 30 session of the Original Downtown Music Walk is specifically designed for foreign participants. BMCHM has collaborated with the performance group DoDam Music to develop bilingual content, ensuring an inclusive and enriching experience.
