Busan, South Korea – On July 16, 2024, Busan city announced a significant urban renewal initiative aimed at revitalizing the area around Busan Station. This project, known as the “Urban Renewal Pilot Project,” seeks to enhance the city’s aesthetic appeal and improve the pedestrian experience by removing, consolidating, and organizing various public facilities that currently clutter the streets.
The Busan Station area has been selected as the pilot site for this innovative project. The decision was made during a meeting on July 15 by the Urban Renewal Project Selection Committee. The primary objective is to create a safer and more pleasant urban environment by eliminating unsightly public structures such as signposts, poles, and electrical boxes that impede pedestrian movement and detract from the cityscape.
The city has allocated 15 billion KRW for this project. These funds will be used to carry out extensive modifications, including the removal, consolidation, and maintenance of public facilities in a 1-kilometer stretch of roads and within a 300-meter radius around major intersections near Busan Station. The goal is to foster a visually appealing and pedestrian-friendly environment that benefits both residents and visitors.
To ensure the project’s success, Busan will collaborate with local districts and relevant organizations. This collaboration will focus on practical and effective strategies for removing and consolidating public facilities. The project is expected to significantly improve the urban walking environment, making it more accessible and enjoyable for pedestrians.
