Busan, South Korea -Busan has been announced as the host city for the 26th International Robot Olympiad (IRO) in 2025. This prestigious event, a global showcase for youth robotics, highlights Busan’s growing reputation as a hub for technological innovation and education.

The announcement came after Busan emerged victorious in a close contest with Langkawi, Malaysia, for the rights to host the event. The decision was finalized at the 25th IRO Committee meeting in Athens, Greece, on January 20, 2024. Busan’s successful bid is the culmination of a strategic campaign that highlighted the city’s appeal and the benefits of hosting the event in Busan, according to officials.

The IRO is not just any competition; it’s one of the world’s leading youth robotics contests, held since 1999. It brings together representatives from 30 partner countries to compete in 42 categories over five days. The event fosters communication and collaboration in robotics, helping participants to emerge as future industry leaders. This year’s event is expected to further broaden the robotics base, enhance robotics education, and have a significant economic impact on the region.

Mayor Park Heong-joon expressed his enthusiasm for the win, stating, “Hosting the world-renowned Robot Olympiad in Busan not only showcases the city’s charm but also its capability as a leading city in robotics.” He anticipates the event will serve as a catalyst for further growth in Busan’s robotics sector.

With the Korean qualifiers scheduled for August 2024 and the main event in January 2025, Busan is poised to maximize the benefits of hosting back-to-back robotics competitions. The influx of participants and visitors, estimated between 5,000 and 10,000 for each event, is expected to not only boost the local economy but also lay a solid foundation for robotics education and industry expansion in the city.

As preparations get underway, the spotlight is on Busan, set to host a global gathering that celebrates the creativity and innovation of young minds in robotics. The city’s infrastructure, experience in hosting international events, and vibrant tech community are sure to make the 26th International Robot Olympiad a memorable and impactful event.
