BUSAN – In an effort to carve out a niche for itself as a global hub, the coastal city of Busan announced the grand opening of its 61st Art Festival today. The event, the city’s premier comprehensive art festivity, is a testament to Busan’s burgeoning cultural prowess.
Hosted in collaboration between Busan City and the Federation Artistic & Cultural Organization of Busan (FACOB), the festival’s grand opening is set to take place at 5 pm in the grand theater of the Busan Citizens’ Hall.
The inauguration ceremony is expected to be a star-studded event with key figures including Busan’s Mayor, Park Heong-joon, and the president of FACOB, Oh Su-yeon. Additionally, over 300 members from various civic and member organizations will grace the event, showcasing performances that span a broad spectrum of genres, from traditional Korean orchestras to street dance.
Of note, the festival will feature traditional dances by the Affiliated Dance School of Shanghai Theatre Academy from China and traditional music performances by Fukuoka Cultural Federation from Japan. These performances underscore Busan’s vision to foster cultural harmony and exchange between the neighboring countries.
Commencing with today’s opening, the 61st Busan Art Festival, co-hosted by Busan City and FACOB, will run until October 29th. The venues for these events include the Busan Cultural Hall, Busan Arts Hall, Busan Citizens’ Hall, and parts of the Busan City Hall.
Originally initiated in 1963 to commemorate Busan’s upgrade to a metropolitan city status, the festival has since transformed into an international cultural exchange event since 2009, in tandem with Busan’s sister cities abroad. This evolution has amplified Busan’s role in fostering global cultural diplomacy.
This year’s festival holds extra significance as it marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of FACOB. The line-up includes a plethora of exhibitions and performances from 12 sub-associations.
