Busan Introduces ‘Festival Shi-Wol’ to Boost Global Image and Tourism

Busan, South Korea – Busan is taking a significant step in its quest to become a global hub city with the launch of Festival Shi-Wol, an event combining exhibitions and conventions across six dynamic sectors. Scheduled from September 30 to October 8, 2024, this festival aims to fuse innovation, culture, and business, inspired by internationally renowned events such as South by Southwest (SXSW).

South by Southwest (SXSW) is a major annual festival held in Austin, Texas, known for its unique blend of music, film, and interactive media. Since its inception in 1987, SXSW has grown into one of the world’s most influential gatherings, where industry leaders, creators, and innovators converge to explore the cutting edge of culture and technology. The festival’s ability to blend various forms of creative expression with business opportunities has made it a model for cities like Busan, which seeks to replicate this synergy in an Asian context through Festival Shi-Wol.

Among the 17 international events featured are the renowned Busan International Film FestivalK-Pop concertsthe World Creator Festival, and a Global Webtoon Festival. The festival will also highlight an international food expo and a data technology hackathon, emphasizing Busan’s commitment to fostering both cultural and technological advancements.

To streamline the experience for visitors, the city will offer integrated tickets that provide access to multiple events, with special packages tailored for tourists. Notably, the festival’s timing coincides with China’s National Day holiday, and specific travel deals will be marketed to Chinese visitors through the popular travel platform Ctrip, reflecting Busan’s strategic outreach to international markets.

Busan’s Mayor, Park Heong-joon, views Festival Shi-Wol as a crucial element in the city’s broader vision to transform into a “global hub city.” “Busan is not just a gathering place; it’s evolving into a city that commands global attention,” said Mayor Park. “Festival Shi-Wol will play a vital role in strengthening our city’s brand and expanding its international appeal.”

By uniting various international events under the Festival Shi-Wol brand, Busan aims to create a powerful synergy that draws both domestic and international visitors. The festival is expected to attract 450,000 tourists, significantly boosting the local economy and encouraging extended stays, which will have a lasting impact on the city’s tourism sector.

In preparation for the expected influx of visitors, Busan is developing temporary venues such as Shi-Wol Village and Shi-Wol Pavilion at BEXCO, one of the city’s premier event locations. These spaces will serve as hubs for networking, exhibitions, and conferences, fostering connections among participants across different industries.

To ensure the smooth execution of such a large-scale event, city officials are implementing comprehensive event preparations. This includes addressing potential challenges such as accommodation shortages, price inflation, and traffic management. A final review of these preparations will be conducted in September to ensure that all aspects of the festival are ready to meet the demands of both local and international attendees.

This approach positions Busan as a key destination for global innovators, creatives, and business leaders seeking new opportunities in Asia. As Festival Shi-Wol unfolds, it has the potential to become an annual event that not only highlights Busan’s cultural and economic strengths but also solidifies its place on the global stage.
