Busan, South Korea – The first-ever Busan International Buddhist Expo opened its doors today at the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (BEXCO), welcoming visitors to explore the rich tapestry of Buddhist culture and traditions. The event runs from August 8 to August 11, 2024, and is expected to draw thousands of attendees from around the world.
The expo kicked off with an opening ceremony at 2 PM, featuring a captivating blend of traditional and contemporary performances aimed at engaging a diverse audience. Highlights included a unique Buddhist electronic dance music (EDM) DJ party by the renowned monk “NewJeansNim,” who skillfully blended sacred Buddhist chants with modern beats. Adding to the excitement, the popular chanting song “Kwan Seum Bosal” delivered a powerful performance of Buddhist hymns.
The ceremony was attended by Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon, prominent Buddhist leaders, and approximately 500 guests. The inclusion of such modern elements aims to challenge and broaden perceptions of Buddhist culture, particularly among younger generations.
The expo features an extensive array of exhibitions and workshops spread across BEXCO’s expansive halls. With over 140 exhibitors and 200 booths, visitors have ample opportunities to immerse themselves in various aspects of Buddhist culture. Zen and meditation exhibits showcase the peace and tranquility achievable through meditation, offering interactive sessions for visitors to experience firsthand.
Traditional and contemporary Buddhist artworks, including sculptures, paintings, and crafts, highlight the artistic heritage of Buddhism. Culinary demonstrations featuring temple cuisine provide insights into the dietary practices of Buddhist monks, allowing visitors to taste and learn about these unique food traditions. Additionally, hands-on workshops designed for all ages engage participants in creating Buddhist crafts and learning meditation techniques
This event is a strategic initiative to enhance Busan’s reputation as a leading destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE). Mayor Park highlighted the expo’s significance in his opening remarks: “The Busan International Buddhist Expo leverages our city’s rich Buddhist cultural resources to offer both locals and international visitors a unique opportunity to enjoy and learn about traditional Buddhist culture. This event will also provide a much-needed space for relaxation and healing during these challenging times.”
With over 20,000 pre-registered attendees and an expected total visitor count of 30,000, the expo has already garnered significant interest. The event organizers are optimistic about its success and its potential to become an annual highlight in Busan’s cultural calendar.
